Click to enlargeThe final setup, blatant gear-porn.

Here is the entire setup: M1A rifle, Sig 229, Blackhawk .308 chest rig (discontinued), 9 M1A mags, 3 Sig 229 mags, Buttstock cleaning kit, sling, and Harris bipod (painted with above method).

This process is very easy and anyone can do it, most people are apprehensive because they may want to sell their guns some day or think they may mess them up. The biggest thing to remember is do not overdo it! Light coats of paint are all you need, once that priming coat is on, you just need to go over each area once. Be creative, but also take the time to look at your work. DO NOT OVERDO IT, I cannot emphasize that enough, if you think you messed something up, just go on to the next thing. If the enemy can see your mess ups, they are probably too close. Also, do not backtrack, do not go back and redo a previous step unless you messed up badly, and if you have to do this redo all steps afterwords, the sidespray from the next color makes the paint job what it is.

A couple sidenotes:

Bowflage: Why don't I use it? walk around some time in the rain for 8 or 9 hours with Bowflage on your weapon, and afterwords observe the black weapon you have. Bowflage removeable paints are not made for military applications, they are designed for civilian hunting. I do strongly recommend Hunter Specialties permanent paints for painting weapons, I am just not a fan of their removeable ones for prolonged combat operations or exercises.

Sealants and all that cool stuff the $100 Sniper paint job comes with: I can do about 20 of these paint jobs for that money. Your gun should already be annodized and protected from the elements. If the paint wears off, redo it, it takes a while to wear away, and when it has happened it only costs a few dollars to redo.

Different environments: just tailor to the mission.

Final words: Have fun with this, I have done quite a few paint jobs, and my technique is always evolving.
